Skies are Blue. Yes one of the songs that always seems to brighten the day. Thoughts of happy times, friends, and family.
In the economy today, bright spots seem to be few and far between. Everyday it seems that sales are down, foreclosures are up, lay offs are common. Not a happy time. If the dreaded pink slip has shown up on your desk, it hits very close to home. It is easier when it has happened to other people.
The best plan of action is to start a job search immediately, no pity party. Once things are set in motion to correct the employment situation, take stock in what you have. Unless the bank account is overflowing, cut backs will be needed. Frills will have to be postponed.
Keeping a positive attitude is essential. Avoid situations and people that will be depressing. If someone is complaining about things, change the subject, or leave the conversation. Maybe avoiding the Debbie Downers in you life is best. The nightly news is a good thing to skip also, no need to hear what you already know repeated. Treat yourself on occasion to something special, though nothing extravagant.
And while searching for a new position, check out job.travel. Jobs in travel and hospitality offer options in many career paths and are located across the country. Limiting yourself to a former industry might prolong your search. re-invent yourself and prepare several versions of your resume. Each one emphasizing a different talent or accomplishment. The job.travel Career Center offers several resume versions and hints on preparation. Also, once a resume is posted to an on-line employment site, hopefully job.travel, make weekly changes. Something as minor as an extra space at the end of a line, will move your resume back to the top of the list in searches.
So, don't get depressed, keep a positive attitude. This is a tough country and things will get better. Job.travel offers more exposure and you never know, benefits like free nights in Tahiti is not a bad thing.
